It is difficult to avoid all the nets and fish traps along the coast of the Malay Peninsula. We anchored in water only 8 feet deep near shore one night in an area which appeared safe because there were no flags or buoys. One of our propeller shafts got wrapped by a rope connecting a long string of small traps. Jerry had to cut the rope to free our boat. We watched the fishermen check these traps during the night, and they were able to pick up and reset them all. Perhaps they did not use flags so other fishermen could not locate their traps and steal their catch. |
